Our forest community

This morning the year 3 & 4 classes met together to discuss our hub names. These relate to the trees found in the indigenous podocarp forests of Aotearoa New Zealand. We talked about how trees reach for the light and grow tall which links with our school value of excellence. There is also a connection with our values of manaakitanga and community in how the trees in a forest protect and sustain the smaller plants, birds and insects which we believe links to our expectations for the tamariki in our hubs looking out for the younger children at St Albans.

The names we decided on are;
Rooms 15 & 16 : Rimu
Rooms 17 & 18 :Tōtara
Rooms 19, 20 & 21 : Kahikatea

Riccarton Bush is a remnant of Canterbury's ancient podocarp forests. Some of the Kahikatea trees here are 600 years old! We recommend a visit there to learn more about our native bush. Click on the image above to find out more.

Another great place to visit is the New Zealand garden in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
